This Week is National Take Your Cat to the Vet Week

August 18th, 2010 Bev 2 comments

My friend, Romeo the Cat, did a survey: Please describe your cat’s behavior when going to the vet. Here are the results:

  • Somehow knows what’s up and runs to hide before we even leave  – 43%
  • Won’t get into the cat carrier – 60.2%
  • Won’t come out of the cat carrier once at the V-E-T – 44.3%
  • Yowls and complains the whole way to the V-E-T – 67%
  • No problem, my cat loves the V-E-T – 10.2%

This week marks National Take Your Cat to the Vet Week–an event created in 2009 by Feline Pine cat litter. They started the event because, in a survey they conducted last year, fewer than 50% of cat owners took their cats to the vet unless they were sick. Many of these people said they didn’t realize they needed to.

It’s recommended that all cats have annual check ups. For senior cats (10 years and older) the American Association of Feline Practitioners recommends bi-annual visits because many diseases begin in middle age and problems in older cats tend to accelerate more quickly.

Why?

  • Cats have a reputation for being “low maintenance,” which is not entirely accurate. They still need regular vet care to keep them healthy and catch problems early before they become more difficult to treat.
  • Cats age faster than humans. Much can happen to a cat’s health in between vet visits.
  • It’s recommended that most cats (especially those 10 years and older) visit the vet every six months because many diseases begin in middle age and problems in older cats tend to accelerate quickly.
  • Despite the many products on the market to help keep your cat’s teeth clean, nothing compares to a thorough dental cleaning by your vet. Regular dental care can prevent serious problems – and expense – later on and dramatically improve your cat’s well being.
  • Regular vet visits are a cost-effective way for owners to take care of their cats as many problems, when caught early, require less extensive – and less expensive – treatment than if the problem progresses and more aggressive treatment is needed.

How long has it been since your cat had a vet visit?

That Doggie Smell!

August 18th, 2010 Bev 5 comments

I woke up before my alarm clock this morning to find Tyler snuggled up against my side. What is it about the smell of  a warm cuddly dog that makes me feel so good? If you have a dog, you know the smell I’m talking about–it’s kinda like warm old popcorn or warm comfy sox that you’ve worn for a little too long. OK, that doesn’t sound very appealing, but for as long as I can remember, the smell of a warm dog cuddled next to me has made me feel good. And every dog that’s ever been available to me for a warm cuddle has produced this aroma. Maybe I associate the smell with the unconditional love that’s implied in the cuddle. Maybe there are pheromones in the dog’s smell that make me feel happy and loved. Or else it’s my emotional association: warm sox smell=cuddly canine love. I don’t know. What I do know is that it’s a smell that makes me feel good. What a great way to start the day!

Maybe I’m a total nut case, but do you recognize the smell I’m talking about? How do you describe it?

Tyler

August 12th, 2010 Bev No comments

Friday August 13 marks 10 weeks that Tyler has been in my life. He was a little charmer when I first met him, but he’s really developed into a sweet boy who’s getting to be so cute it makes your teeth ache just looking at him!

OK, I admit it! He’s got me wrapped around his little paw, and I need to do some serious thinking about puppy classes. We both need massive lessons in “sit” “stay” and “drop it!”

Here are some photos I took with my cell phone–my usual camera has not been cooperating lately.

A very common Tyler pose: the playbow.

One of Tyler's toys ended up in his mouth and around his head. I laughed so much it was hard to get the photo!

Tuckered out from a Bichon Blitz, Tyler flops down on the rug.

Look at that face! Have you EVER seen such a sweet face??!

Tyler's hair has grown out some more. He's really starting to look like a Bichon!

His fur is so soft!

The greatest gift that Tyler has brought is the way he has bonded with my mom.

Feel the love!

A New Profile Photo

Fluffy Tyler!

Fluffy Tyler!

Today marks six weeks that Tyler has been in his new home. It also marks his first visit to Aunt Tracy, our groomer par excellence. Not that she could do much more than even up the bad haircut he got when the dogtor treated him for parvo. But she did the best she could with what she had to work with, and I must say that Tyler is looking very handsome and fluffy today!

I haven’t been in a hurry to change my profile photo from Bailey to Tyler, but maybe it’s time. I think Bailey would be pleased with the way Tyler is running me ragged with his demands, and it seems right to start including him in my online life.

So today we took some photos:

Tyler & Bev--our new profile photo!

I have updated my “About Me” page and you’ll now see the new profile photo of me and the new little man in my life.

This is really such a small thing, and yet it feels like I’m making such an enormous change in my life. I’ll never forget Bailey. But this silly little change of profile photo is a new indication that my sweet girl is gone and will not be back. Another step in that whole “stages of grief” thing, I guess.

Maybe I’ll go cuddle Tyler for a while.

Tyler the Traveler

June 28th, 2010 Bev 2 comments

Last week, we traveled from Dayton Ohio to Madison Wisconsin because of some family business. Of course Mr. Tyler came with us! Tyler already has some experience traveling–he flew with me from Phoenix when I adopted him. But we had not yet taken him on a long trip by car.

TRAINING FOR CAR TRAVEL

We knew this trip was going to happen, but we didn’t know the timing. So for the past couple of weeks–since Tyler joined our family–we’ve taken him in the car with us on errands when the opportunity presented itself. Tyler is a puppy, with a puppy’s energy and curiosity, and we knew he would need to be somehow confined to ride safely. If we had more time, we might have tried training him to one of the many varieties of doggie seat belts. But we knew that for a long trip (8 hours) on short notice we would have better luck if we crated him.

Puppy in a bag!

Tyler trained for our road trip in his Sherpa bag (with the top zipped closed, of course).

Our training consisted of short trips with Tyler in Bailey’s old Sherpa bag–it’s the biggest size so he had lots of room. The bag has a strap along the side that can be hooked over the extended handle of a rolling suitcase or through which a car seat belt can pass to secure the bag to the seat of the car. The weather has been hot, so when we did our errands with Tyler one of us always remained in the car with him to make sure he didn’t get overheated. Tyler objected to being confined by treating us to a puppy song that sounded surprisingly like a kitty cat, but after the first few minutes he quieted down and accepted the fact that he was not in control of his destiny.

And he didn’t get car sick!

WHAT WE PACKED (FOR TYLER)

  • Wet wash cloth and towel–to clean paws after going potty at germ-infested roadsides.
  • Loaded (with kibble) Kongs®
  • Tyler’s favorite  toys
  • Leash + poop bags
  • Eukanuba Small Breed Puppy and Iams Puppy Biscuits–enough for a week
  • Food and water dishes
  • A “loose” babygate
  • Carpet cleaner (in case of accidents)
  • Our Sherpa bag (for quick excursions)
  • A couple of fabric pee pads
  • Some photos of Tyler, in case he got lost
  • Updated ID tag on Tyler’s collar that included my cell phone number and information on where we were staying.
  • Tyler’s crate, bedding, and favorite pillow

TYLER IN THE CAR

Tyler crated in car

Ready to travel!

Tyler would be riding on the back seat in his crate. The day we left, I wedged his crate as close as possible to the front seats so that we could easily keep an eye on him and so that he would not feel so isolated. I used our suitcases on the floor to give the crate stability. And I wedged several pillows between the crate and the seat back to keep the crate in place. I was lucky that the middle seat belt doesn’t have a shoulder strap–so it easily secured the crate to the seat. I was also lucky that the opening of the crate was on the passenger’s side, not the driver’s side.

Tasty kibbles!

Tyler takes time out from his duties as co-pilot to chew on his Kong.

In case I had to pull over on the Interstate to deal with a puppy emergency, I would be using the car door away from the traffic. And (ultimate horror!) if the stinker managed to slip past me and dart out of the car he would not be jumping directly into traffic.

TYLER AS A HOUSEGUEST

Before we hit the road, we double checked with our hostess that it was alright to bring Tyler along. We were very clear that Tyler was not completely housebroken yet.

Buddy

Tyler's new friend, Buddy.

Our hostess has a Cocker Spaniel, and she was very happy to welcome Tyler as a guest–in spite of his being potty-challenged. And much as I tried to set Tyler up for success, he had some accidents–which we made sure got cleaned up. Before we left, we also made sure that all of Tyler’s poops were cleared from the yard.

Tyler under the dresser

Tyler finds a crate-like spot to catch a snooze

As I moved our stuff into the bedroom that Tyler and I would share, I looked closely for things that Tyler might get into–anything chewable on the floor, electrical cables, etc.–and moved them out of reach. I didn’t notice that there was “crawl space” under some of the furniture until I missed Tyler one night at bedtime. I found him nearly asleep under a chest of drawers!

That handy babygate!

Mealtimes presented a challenge because each dog was on a different food for specific needs. During mealtimes, Tyler and I stayed in our room where I tried to convince Tyler his food was just as good as Buddy’s. Tyler and Buddy had a great time playing, and the babygate came in handy when we needed to control either dog’s access to the other.

All the comforts of home.

Tyler's home away from home.

Tyler felt right at home–surrounded by dear friends–with his crate handy for an easy escape when he got tired of all the noisy goings-on. Having the Sherpa bag with us allowed us to bring Tyler along if we went anywhere in the car.

Resting after playing

Tyler and Buddy: big rest after big play!

Though it was a sad occasion, we had a wonderful visit with our family, and Tyler had a very positive experience.

What do you do when you travel with your pet?
