Low Key Lacy Loves her Humans!

March 20th, 2012 Comments off

She’s a sweetheart!

Lacy Small Paws

Lacy is a female Bichon who was born in 2005. She weighs 28 pounds. Lacy is a sweet girl who has had surgery for bladder stones. She has now fully recovered and is looking for her forever home. Lacy gets along great with other dogs and does fine with cats. She would also do well as your only dog. Children in the home should be aged 10 and over. Lacy is low keyed and just loves being around her favorite person (who could be you if you are the lucky one:)) A fenced in yard would be nice and she would love her person to not work full time. She rides great in the car and loves nice walks around the block. Lacy is house trained.

Cookie and Keeper Find a Home!

March 19th, 2012 Comments off

Here is another story of how two wonderful people, Paul & Carole, went from Foster 101 to Adoption Conversion!

During our 49 years of marriage, we always adopted female dogs from the pound. They were always medium size dogs with short brown hair. Pretty much interchangeable. Though we loved them all. In 2003 our last dog, Peaches, passed away. We were on a trip to visit friends in South Carolina and it was a cold, icy weekend. We were concerned about traveling up to North Carolina but everything went OK.

Keeper and Cookie

When I got home, I checked our emails and had one from Small Paws saying there were two little white fluffy dogs that had been turned in and was anyone interested in fostering them. I immediately replied that we would take them. They were in Columbia, South Carolina and we made arrangements with a volunteer to drive them to Gastonia, North Carolina and we would meet her there and pick them up. We did on December 7, 2003. Obviously we didn’t have much information about them. But Keeper (a male) was 1 year old and Cookie (a female) was 6 months. Supposedly they had the same mother. That’s all we knew. They were matted and had fleas, but were adorable anyway. We’d never had two dogs at once, and not a male in a long time. Fostering lasted about 10 minutes and we adopted them. They have been a pleasure. I since learned that they were kept on a back porch and had never been on grass or in a house. They are so sweet and appreciative, and spoiled. We would like to thank Small Paws for 9 wonderful years with our fluffs. Keeper looks like a Terrier and Cookie looks like a Maltese. Thanks to everyone involved with Small Paws, it is a wonderful organization.

Presley Will Be the King of your Heart!

March 19th, 2012 Comments off

Here’s a young Fluff who dances when he sees his humans!

Presley is a male bichon/mix who was born sometime in 2010. He weighs 21 pounds. Presley had to have his tail amputated due to an injury. He is completely healed and doing well. He is a happy boy with lots of energy!

Presley Small Paws

Presley can never be caged or kenneled. not even at the groomer’s. He has to be washed, cut and sent home, never put in a cage to be dried. He needs a home with another dog or someone who is at home at all times, he can never be left alone as he will have anxiety and start to panic. I have found that he loves being with my basset and doesn’t mind being with her while we are at work. He will need a home with another dog. He is completely potty trained and loves long walks, and is wonderful on a leash. Presley is very much a alpha dog and wants to be the boss. He gets along with children aged 4 and over. He will give you more love then you ever had before and will stand on his hind legs and dance with you when he first sees you. No matter if it’s the first thing in the morning or when you get home from work. He doesn’t get along with cats, not that he dislikes them, but he get’s soooooooooo excited when he see’s them, he scares them and they attack.

Missy and Sadie–Another Foster 101 Succession to Adoption Conversion!

March 18th, 2012 Comments off

Here is an update from Maxine and Ron–with two new fosters-into-forever dogs! Maxine has had some health issues since last March,  and her dogs–her pack!–have helped her in her battle.

Well here we are this year and we have failed foster 101 again, not once but twice! Now we have two girls 4 years old and totally different.

Missy Small Paws

Missy Small Paws

Missy was the first one to come, she and her mom were taped in a box and put under a bridge, she came to us thru Puerto Villarta, Mexico and she is terrified of everything that makes any kind of a noise, paper, wood going into the stove, picking up a broom. It’s obvious that she was abused, so when it was time to put her on Petfinder we just adopted her.  She came to us with the name Cloud but that really didn’t fit so she is Missy and she loves to dress up and will choose what she wants to wear. She has dresses and coats and its really fun to dress up a dog that loves it. When we get ready to go she goes where her clothes are so she can choose

Sadie Small Paws

Sadie Small Paws

The other new girl on the other hand has a fit if you try to dress her up or put a sweater on her She says not on your life! Her name is Sadie. Her owners’ health went down hill. One had two stokes and the other was waiting for a heart transplant. When we picked Sadie up to foster she was trimmed like a Bedlington Terrier. We fixed that right away. She had gone to a vet in the Tacoma area who had put her on an antibiotic for a bladder infection but also said she had crystals. So having had a foster dog previously with stones we at once took her to our vet, Dr. Larry G.  He didn’t even have to take an x-ray. He just felt under her tummy and said she was full of stones and we needed to operate immediately–which he did. When we explained she was a foster girl he did the surgery free of charge. She had over 75 stones some as big as a quarter, so now she is on special food for the rest of her life. We decided to adopt her and not take a chance on someone not giving her what she needs. She had not had permission to get on the bed previously but our other guys taught her to do that. I bought her a dress that matched one of Missy’s but she had a fit and would not let me put it on her. She does the Bichon wave to get treats,  or when you tell her she’s pretty.

This year since we are trying to feed all the kids healthy treats. The vets suggested chicken hearts and chicken livers so we cook those up for them. If you have a dog that takes meds, the hearts are awesome because of the valves–you can just tuck the meds right in.

Missy is the one in the raincoat, she is not happy cause its pouring down rain and she does not want to go out in it at all.

Sadie is all comfy in a doggie bed and says no way she wants to go out either.

I have been doing a battle with breast cancer since October and these kids are so very comforting to me. I am in the cleanup stage now with 6 more weeks of chemo and then I will be cancer free.

It’s never a foster failure when Fluffs find furever homes!

You Can’t Resist Skipper!

March 18th, 2012 Comments off

Skipper is a young Fluff, ready to jump into a new home!

Skipper Small Paws

Hi, my name is Skipper, and I’ll tell you why! I am very energetic and I like to jump, turn around in circles, and jump some more. In fact, my foster uncle said I’m a champion high jumper. I even jumped on my foster dads shoulders the other day when he sat on the porch step to read the mail! You can see why I will need a tall doggie gate or pen. Probably one reason I’m so active is because I’m still really a puppy. I’m possibly a Bichon Havanese, because I have very soft fine hair.. I get along with other dogs, but I like to be in charge when we play. I don’t really like being put in a pen or crate, because I prefer being with my people, and I let them know by barking when they have to put me up. Oh, and like most puppies, I play nip when I get excited, and tend to be a bit hyper, so I’ll need my forever family to help me with that. If I’m with children, they will need to be at least 10-years-old. I know what a doggie door is, and I like to use one to a fenced yard. Potty training? Well, I’m working on that. I will walk on a leash, but I need more training in walking without pulling. Did I mention I’m very, very cute?! You probably can’t resist me!

Jumpin’ Dejon!

March 17th, 2012 Comments off

Dejon is a little buddy waiting to happen!

Dejon is a male Bichon born sometime in 1998. He weighs 21 pounds.

Dejon is very active and loves to jump! He enjoys going for frequent walks and walks well on his leash. He is working hard on his house training and with one on one attention he should be able to accomplish this feat. He loves attention!

Dejon is a sweet boy who hasn’t been observed with children, therefore, children in the home should be aged 10 and over. He takes medication for itchy skin which keeps the condition under control, otherwise it isn’t an issue.

Sunny Sounds like Scooby-Doo

March 16th, 2012 1 comment

Is Sunny the right dog for you?

Sunny is a wonderful, older male Bichon, whose birthday is March 28, 2001. He weighs about 16 lbs. He was surrendered by his older owner when she could no longer care for him. Sunny has allergy problems, but has doing well in his foster home. He is taking Benadryl twice a day and his feet are wiped with a wet wipe, as his biggest problem is grass. He is also on a limited ingredient diet and that may have helped. It is believed he was raised as an only dog, but has adjusted well to the other dogs in his foster home, even learning to play and often sharing his crate at night. He would do well as an only dog, but would probably be fine with another submissive dog in the home. He grumbles at the other dogs and his foster mom believes this is his way of talking, as he has all kinds of tones and pitches-she sometimes calls him Scooby-doo because of this. He likes to play with toys and tug of war. Sunny is potty trained, but sometimes marks in the house, which is likely a result of the other male dogs in the home. If it continues in his new forever home, a belly band would help this situation. Sunny likes to have some cuddle time with his foster mom and almost hugs her. He enjoys watching TV and will do the bichon wave and bark at any animals he sees. Sunny is an awesome dog and will make a great pet!

Shea Sometimes Looks Like a Meercat

March 15th, 2012 Comments off

Sweet Shea come to Small Paws Rescue from a commercial puppy mill rescue and must be placed in a home with a socialized dog already living there. The children in the home must be over the age of 10.

My name is Shea, a male Bichon . I was born September 8, 1998.

I used to be in a not so nice place for a long time. Then some very nice people got me out of there, cleaned me up and made me feel better. Then I got to come to a foster home. I have foster brothers and sisters to play with. I have my very own solar powered re-charging station, my pillows and blankets to relax and recline on. I am still timid, but I don’t run around like I used to when it’s time for my heart worm pill and flea treatment.

I sit up on my back legs and wave at you, Dad says I look like a Meercat. Especially if you have treats! I have a very special job here. I am a home alarm system. I let Dad and Mom know when someone comes to the steps. I also smile (kinda). I’m still very afraid of outside and my leash is NOT my friend. I have issues with that wide open spaces thing. It’s too big. If you would be patient with me and not force things, I’ll be fine. All I ask is a secure fenced in back yard. A pillow or two. Yes, I’m still scared, but I’ve came a long long way. I’m smart, very smart. I don’t mind cats, older children that don’t run around fast.
