AKC/Eukanuba National Championship About to be Broadcast!

My friend Emily over on Eukanuba Unleashed posted today about how to throw a “pawty” on February 6 when Animal Planet broadcasts the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. Em has got all the bases covered–from invitations to decor to drinks. She even includes a scorecard–the Bone Collector Grid–that you can use in a game to keep track of which dog is moving forward for the win. Actually, I think the Bone Collector Grid might be a fun game to play at any dog show–especially for kids who might become a little antsy during the judging.

The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship

This past Saturday and Sunday (12/12-13), Long Beach California hosted the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. My buddy Emily was there and she tweeted (@askEukanuba and @EukanubaEmily) some great photos! Since not everybody is on Twitter, I thought I’d share them here (Em’s tweet is the photo caption).

Check out this pretty banner at the entrance to the big show ^Em #eukdogshow Can't wait for all the fun events tomorrow.

Emily had a great time with Shawn Johnson–maybe you don’t remember her? Shawn won gymnastic gold in Beijing at the 2008 Olympics, and she has a dog named Tucker.

Shawn autographed some really beautiful dog collars that were given away as prizes:

And then it was time for the show! The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship will be broadcast on Animal Planet on February 6. If you want to know who won, visit this spoiler link. You’ll also find more show results on Dog Show Poop.

What a fabulous weekend. Maybe I’ll get to go next year!

Agility From the Dog’s View

I just checked this video into YouTube. It’s a dog’s eye view of running an agility course. This is Jace the Border Collie, and you’d be panting too if you were going as fast as she is!!! (BTW, the first 20 seconds of this video are silent.)

The People Behind the Paw: Jennifer, R&D

Jen and friend, in the ring!
Jen and friend, in the ring!

Jennifer has been part of Pet Care for 6 years.

1. What pets share your life?
I share my life with wonderful Afghan Hounds!  I grew up in a dog show family that consisted of Irish Setters, Brittany Spaniels and Springer Spaniels.  After I graduated from college I decided that I would get back into the show world and picked a breed that I have always been in love with.   Afghan Hounds are the true King of Dogs and I adore them.

My husband and I are breeders and show our dogs in AKC conformation events, so we have a few.  My first Afghan is “Woody”, CH. Winsong Hollywood Park.  He is a blue brindle and turned 4 this year.  Last year we acquired a 4 year old red brindle male from Italy, his name is “Rush”, CH. Agha Djari’s Revenge of Xenos.  He did some phenomenal winning in Europe and continue to do well in the U.S.  We had to teach him English and now he fits right in!  We have bred a few litters and have several champions with our kennel name attached.  It is a very rewarding experience.

We are currently training some great puppies that are getting ready for the ring next year.

2. What is one of your most memorable experiences with your pet?
My very first dog show and the first time my new puppy “Woody” was at a show was by far my most memorable experience!  He was 6 months and 2 days old and we walked into the ring with heads held high ready to conquer our first show together.  Well, a series of unfortunate events was soon to follow.  “Woody” managed to win his class of 6 dogs which was fantastic!  On our way out of the ring another dog snapped and him and he proceeded to scream–not just a little short-lived scream but a continuous scream that seemed to last an hour!  It was so bad that the judge stopped the show to check on him! He finally stopped and my face turned back to the normal color.  Then we went back into the ring for Winners Dog and when I had him stacked I guess my foot was sticking out too far because I tripped the judge!  He fell in the ring!  After all of the chaos we managed to win a 4 point major, I couldn’t believe it!  Very memorable, indeed!

3. What’s your favorite story about pets in the office?
I think one of the greatest things about working for P&G Pet Care is the great opportunity to have our pets in the office.  There are many times that people will stop by my office and just ask to pet my dog because it has been a long day or they have just come from a hard meeting.  They also make meetings far more enjoyable by finding ways to interrupt at just the “right” moments.  There are several different breeds that make up our office and it is fun to be reminded who you are really working for!

4. What is your favorite part of working at Pet Care?
I am constantly amazed at the science that goes into making our foods.  Our R&D community is full of amazing ideas and the technology behind our products is phenomenal.  My favorite thing about working at Pet Care is to see the difference that our products make to the lives of dogs and cats.  I love to hear the stories from people that have switched to our brands and how it has changed their pet’s life.

In my work I have the unique opportunity to experience the power of our products before they are available to consumers.  It is obvious to me how much our company truly cares about improving the lives of dogs and cats.

The People Behind the Paw: Nathan, Nutritional Scientist

Scooby

Nathan has been part of Pet Care for over two years.

1. Tell us about a pet you shared your life with in the past?
Scooby – 11 year old neutered male chocolate lab. Scooby was mine and my wife’s only child for the first 9 years of marriage. He was spoiled as an only child and is still spoiled at his retirement home (in the country on 5 acres with many animals to chase). His favorite pastimes include swimming in ANY water he can find (even if covered in ice), chasing rabbits squirrels and cats, looking for crumbs under my daughters highchair and playing Frisbee.

2. What is the funniest thing your pet ever did?
We used to take Scooby to a dog park but he developed a nasty habit of “marking” other dogs toys.  At one point he thought it was also a good idea to “mark” another dogs owner.  After he pee’d on the guys leg the man responded.. “If that is the worst thing that happens to me today, it’ll be alright”.  We never took Scooby to that dog park again.

3. What’s your favorite story about pets in the office?
Scooby comes into work on occasion but gets very annoyed by the amount of noise that takes place in an office. I get “dirty looks” from him when the phone rings. I guess he is just turning into a grumpy old man.

4. What is your favorite part of working at Pet Care?
My favorite Part of Pet Care is working for a company that is truly interested in doing what is best for the animal. I think my job does make a difference in the lives of both the animal consumer and the pet owner.  It is great to see the products we are working on come to life on the shelf and know how much work went into getting it there.

Charmin at Crufts

I was just looking at some of the Crufts results that Billy Wheeler has posted over on Dog Show Poop–Looks like one of my favs, Charmin (AKA CH Efbe’s Hidalgo At Goodspice), was selected Best In Group for the Terriers!

Charmin won Best In Show at the 2007 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. Charmin is owned by Margery Good, and I found a couple of YouTube videos where she talks about Charmin.

Charmin and Margery Good

One of my favorite marketing geeks has been kind enough to add the new Eukanuba dog TV commercial to YouTube. Here it is:

It was so wonderful to see Margery Good and Charmin’s brother last night competing in the Best in Show ring at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship (did you catch it last night? If not, check Animal Planet on local listings–they will be re-running it again).

Thanks Elliott!!

AKC/Eukanuba National Championship THIS SATURDAY!!

I didn’t get to go to the Eukanuba National this year (WAA!!). Even though Dog Show Poop kept us all up-to-date on what was going on (thanks Billy!), I still wanna watch it on TV. And FINALLY it’s gonna be broadcast. THIS SATURDAY!!

The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship will be simulcast on Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009 from 8-11 p.m. (ET/PT). Highlights from the AKC Agility Invitational will air on Animal Planet on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009 at 8 p.m. (ET/PT).

Animal Planet has fabulous coverage of the show on their web site.

Here is last year’s commercial–it’s too funny!!

And if you want a preview of everything that went on before and during the Eukanuba Championship, I’ve collected a playlist on YouTube with all the videos I could find (ACK! At last count that was 91!):

One More From Rose City….

I got this photo today, from Michele. She says: “His name is Petey. He is a Bull Mastiff. He’s a little over 200 pounds and I have to say, he was the SWEETEST big boy!! I am a huge fan of the large and giant breeds, and when this boy nudged me for a Eukanuba biscuit, I HAD to get a pic with him!!!”

What a doll-baby he is!

YES WE CAN! and Portland….

What a day! I wish I could be in DC, but I think I have a better view with CNN.

The Rose City Classic is finished, and I recommend checking in with Billy at Dog Show Poop for the results–he also has excellent pictures! In fact, there’s a beautiful photo of CH Aviator’s Luck B A Lady, who is a Portugese Water Dog and was part of the Best in Show competition. The Portugese Water Dog is one of the breeds under consideration for our new First Dog. I still think the First Family should strongly consider a Bichon from Small Paws Rescue.

Here’s the last report from Allison as she leaves Portland and the Rose City Classic:

SUNDAY 1/13/09 11:17 PM: Sadly this show has come to an end for us! As we leave, we’re thrilled that we had an opportunity to talk with so many people about their dogs and the science and benefits that Eukanuba has to offer! We went through over 1,000 pounds of food samples! Any way you slice it that is a WOW portion of samples for our customers and breeders to try. It reminds me of why I do what I do everyday. I love what I do. I love connecting with people and their dogs.

In good mama fashion I had to bring something home for my little man, Roo Roo (2.5 year old Shih Tzu) He will now be sporting a brand new lead fit for any champion show dog. Michele is also bringing home a squeaker pull toy for her three Boxers. Bye bye Portland! What a great show!

I’ve started a YouTube playlist for the Rose City Show. Here it is:
