Important Information Regarding Iams Canned Cat Food

June 9th, 2010 Bev No comments

As you may know, I work for P&G Pet Care in Consumer Relations. I’m writing this blog post to get some important information out to pet parents—particularly those who feed their cats Iams Canned Cat food

Today we are announcing the voluntary recall of specific lots of Iams Canned Cat Foods in North America as a precautionary measure.  Some of this product does not meet quality standards due to low levels of vitamin B1 (thiamine).

Thiamine (vitamin B1) is a water soluble vitamin.  It plays a role in a number of body functions including metabolism and energy, as well as supporting the nervous system.  It is found in meats and vegetables and is also supplemented in pet foods to ensure a complete and balanced diet.

This recall is limited to only Iams Canned Cat Food.  No other products are involved.

Health concerns would be limited primarily to cases where pet owners have been feeding their cat only canned, wet food.

More details can be found on the Iams web site here: http://media.iams.com/iams/en_US/data_root/html/recall_message.html

Any concerns should be directed to our Consumer Relations group at 877-340-8826.

Jen Visits the Everything Pets Expo in Cincinnati!

May 12th, 2010 Bev 1 comment

In early April, while I attended  BlogPaws in Columbus, my teammate Jen attended the Everything Pets Expo in Cincinnati. Here’s what she had to say about it:

The weekend of April 9-11 was the Iams Everything Pets Expo at the Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati.  This was an Expo packed with exciting Air Dogs, lovable dogs, cats and foals that needed homes, and even a few marsupial-reptile-amphibian attractions to please everyone!

Iams was the Sponsor of the Event and took center stage with games and giveaways.

First up is Ultimate Air Dogs!  A lot of the dogs were there showing off for the crowd.  These dogs were amazing and made me want to go home and encourage my dogs to get off the couch!

There were a lot of Rescue Organizations attending the Expo.  What a great way to get the word out on all of the cats and dogs available for adoption!

Grrand Golden Retriever Rescue & Adoption had two wonderful Golden Ambassadors attending; you just couldn’t get enough of these two guys:

Golden Retrievers

Purrfect Feline Friends Cat Rescue had some of the most laid back kitties…they did not care at all about the commotion around them!  They were just looking for a home to call their own!

Lucky Chin Japanese Chin Rescue pulls dogs from auctions and puppy mills.  They had a few along looking for a good home!

So your house is already full with cats & dogs?  How about a horse?  Great!  We have that covered too.  Beechmont Stables & Rescue had 3 week old Nurse Mare Foals in attendance!  Now if you don’t look at these pictures and say ‘Aww’ to yourself….

Another popular organization was Sugar Gliders R Us; you just could not get enough of these little marsupials!  They even shared their prickly Hedgehog friend, although I’m not convinced that he was thrilled with being disturbed from his nap…

Last, but not least, was one of the most educational attendees.  Cool Critters Outreach is a reptile education and rescue organization that supports educational animal experiences for classrooms and beyond!

OK, this whole encounter just made me smile..

You’ve probably already heard about this, but in case you haven’t here’s the press release:

P&G Expands Further in ‘Super Premium’ Pet Food Segment

CINCINNATI, May 5, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ –The Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE: PG) has signed an agreement to acquire Natura Pet Products, Inc., a privately-held pet food business based in Davis, California.

This move enables P&G to expand into the attractive “holistic and naturals” segment of the pet food category, complementing P&G’s current Iams and Eukanuba brands and helping the Company advance its overall growth strategy of “reaching more consumers in more parts of the world more completely.”

Natura’s brands include Innova, Evo, California Natural, Healthwise, Mother Nature and Karma. These brands are sold in a limited number of pet specialty stores and through veterinarians, mainly in the United States and Canada.

”These outstanding brands and the great employees of Natura Pet Products will complement our Eukanuba and Iams brands very well,” said Dan Rajczak, senior vice president of P&G’s global pet care and snacks businesses. “This acquisition gives us a strong position in the holistic and natural pet food segment. It will enable us to enhance the health and well-being of even more dogs and cats and represents an exciting new source of growth for our business.”

”It’s time for the right company to take our brands to the next level of growth. P&G is that company,” said John Rademakers, founder and owner of Natura Pet Products. “We know that P&G will honor our history as they capitalize on their strengths to build these brands.”

Natura Pet Products employs about 140 people, mainly at its production sites in San Leandro, California and Fremont, Nebraska. P&G is targeting to close this deal in about a month, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory clearances. Specific terms of the deal are not being disclosed.

The People Behind the Paw: Jason, External Relations

February 19th, 2010 Bev No comments

Jason and Woody strut their stuff!

Jason leads our North American External Relations team. He’s been with Pet Care for 11 years.

1. What pets share your life?
Wow – there are several.  Since my wife and I raise and show Afghan Hounds, we share our lives with many of them!  Some of the notables are Woody, a 4 year old blue brindle male (and the man of the house), Bella, a 3 year old black-masked red female who’s as sweet as sugar pie, and Rush, our Italian import.  Black, lots of hair, handsome!

2. What is the funniest thing your pets have ever done?
These are too numerous to mention.  They make me laugh every day, and I love them for it.

3. What’s your favorite story about pets in the office?
My favorite story is about Vicki’s dog Rocky (Vicki is a coworker in External Relations).  Now mind you Rocky is the number 1 Boston Terrier in the country – but don’t be fooled.  We came back from a meeting, and Rocky had DESTROYED Vicki’s cube!!!  Her phone was in the floor, receiver over here and base over there.  The contents of her purse were EVERYWHERE.  The lipstick was open.  The pens had chewed caps.  Papers littered her desk, her chair, and all over the floor.  It was hilarious!  And who could get mad at a face like Rocky’s?

4. What is your favorite part of working at Pet Care?
I love being around people with a passion for cats and dogs.  For so many of us, what we do at work and how we live at home are pretty inseparable – pets are what we love.  So to do work where pets not only can have a place, but are featured and our sole reason for being is wonderful!

FEED PETS IN NEED: ANH of Bear Lake

February 11th, 2010 Bev No comments

Each month, we (Iams) invite people to vote for their favorite Iams Home 4 the Holidays organization in our Feed Pets in Needcontest. At the end of the month, the two groups with the most votes will win a month’s supply of Iams Pet Food.

This program was launched this past November, and ANH is our first of two winners for that month.

ANH (Animals Need Help) of Bear Lake is located in Montpelier, Idaho. On their very sweet, very musical web site, I found beautiful images of some of the dogs and cats they have available for adoption. I also discovered a truly wonderful video that brought tears to my eyes. Good tears.

My contact at Animals in Need is Lorrie Jensen, and she kindly consented to be interviewed by email:

Chloe

Sweet little Chloe may be the right kitty for you!

Please tell us about how ANH operates—do all the pet orphans live under the same roof?
We have a very small facility. When we are full we rely on foster homes to help us out. We work totally on donation and fund raisers. We require a reference to adopt and check every reference to make sure our furkids will be safe and happy. Everyone is spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccinations and socialized before they go home. We are not an open shelter but meet the adopting families at their convenience.

Delilah

Delilah is a sweet pooch who needs a home.

What is your job at ANH? What do you do?
We are all volunteers at ANH. We each take a turn every day caring for and playing with the animals. Between us we are out to the shelter about 5 times a day. Each of us does something different with the animals. Some just go for a walk, others go for car rides and runs. We try to get them used to as many different experiences are possible. We all help with the cleaning, laundry and daily chores. I do the Petfinder site and our website. I answer calls and emails and screen new potential families to make sure our furkids have the very best homes possible. I also do deliveries when needed. Lots and lots of fund raising time. From vet runs to eye meds, toenails and removing stitches. We are all available for whatever is needed. We have the most dedicated group of volunteers you will find anywhere.

Adorable Keisha and Kierra might be the dogs for you

Adorable Keisha and Kierra might be the dogs you're looking for!

What’s the most important thing that ANH does to help animals?
We make sure our animals are healthy and socialized before they go to a new home. We also care that it’s a good match when we place one of our kids with a new family. If there is ever any problem, we are always very happy and willing to take them back. I think the very most important thing we do is love them. When they leave our shelter, they know someone loved them. They are happy wonderful little guys who are ready to be family members.

What’s the most inspiring thing that happened at ANH during Iams Home 4 the Holidays?
It was so amazing how many people helped us in the voting [for the Feed Pets in Need contest]. We are so small and wondered if we even had a chance. We have a wonderful support team and they all rallied to help. The phone call that we won was fantastic too. I felt like we had won the lottery, actually I could barely talk, I was crying so hard. You will never know how much we appreciated this opportunity and how much it helped us.

Mazzie is available for adoption

Mazzie is a beauty who would love a furever family!

What is the hardest part of your job?
I can hardly stand it when I see animals that have been abused and neglected. I wish we could help more. We try to stay as positive as possible. We know after they are with us, they are safe. We have made a commitment to keep our site positive and not always talk about the sadness we see. We like to present our furkids like this is a new beginning.

What do you love the most about your job?
Seeing happy pets with wonderful loving families. We keep in touch with so many of our families. We get to hear and see that they are really safe and sound. Oh and who doesn’t love all those wet kisses and furry hugs.

Niki could be the playmate you seek!

Niki could be the playmate you seek!

What advice do you have for anyone who wants to volunteer at a shelter?
Do it. People say that they love animals too much and it would just be too hard. That’s exactly the kind of person shelters need. Someone who will never drop the ball and will fight every single day for these wonderful homeless animals. Besides it’s a way we can each save our little corner of the world.

What can people do to help ANH?
Spay and neuter pets. Speak up for the animals who can’t speak up for themselves. When you see something that needs help. Just help.

What is your perfect day?
[This past] Sunday was a perfect day. We placed two sweet animals in wonderful homes, heard from both families later on that night that all was well and The Saints won Yay!

Sassy is looking for a home!

From Bev: The dogs and cats who’s photos appear here were available for adoption from ANH at the time of this post. They’re cuties, so if you’re interested in adopting one of them you better get busy!
